Orchid, Church

Feb 28, 2009 by Janine |
On Friday I went to the International Orchid Show in Miami with my mom. I got 4 "birthday orchids" all fragrant varieties.

I was struck by the coloring on this one, very unusual:

Today Rich and I went to the Greek Festival, held at the local Greek Orthodox Church. The food was yummy and they were giving tours of the church.

I am off to Alanta tomorrow for a week of training. It is supposed to snow! Hopefully I will have some pictures to share next weekend.

Blog is back in working order as far as I can tell. I haven't decided what to do with the gallery yet, right now there is nothing there. Thinking of redesigning it. Thanks to Rich and his hard work getting the blog back up and running.

Manatee seen at work

Went for a bike ride at Riverbend Park this morning. Almost got into a collision with three deer bolting across the path!
A pair of Downy Woodpeckers provided some great photo opportunities.

I am in the process of switching website hosts so there might be some site downtime in the next few days. Hope to get everything back up and running shortly.

See you soon!

Marsh birds

I visited Green Cay wetland yesterday for the first time in months. It was a bit cloudy and chilly but as usual there were plenty of birds out:

Pied Billed Grebe

Male Blue Winged Teal

A very unusual find for this time of year, a nest of newly hatched baby alligators. A kind old gentleman pointed them out to me, otherwise I doubt I would have seen them. They were hidden deep in a thicket of gator flag, appropriately.

Two male Red-Winged blackbirds were dueling with song on the boardwalk railing.

They had gathered a crowd of a few spectators, including myself and another photographer snapping away. Next thing we know a fast moving "power walker" pushed through the crowd and thundered along the boardwalk, scaring off one of the songsters and silencing the other. Some people are so rude!
However, the walker did not escape without getting the middle finger from one of the onlookers! And no, it wasnt me. Not only is it a nuisance to photographers, but "Power Walking" as it is called, is actually not allowed at Green Cay for safety reasons (the boardwalks can be slippery) and it is even signposted at the entrance.
Even with the minor annoyance, it was a fun walk and a nice way to end the day.

in the yard

First strawberry of the year:

This one isnt quite ready yet.

We live about 80 miles to the north of where we did last winter, and it is noticeably cooler here. Another cold front is coming through this week, and we may have frost, so I will have to cover these plants, plus bring in all the orchids. Again.

Things have been crazy busy lately (in a good way) so I have not had a chance to get out and take any pictures. So, here are some more from the yard today:

Hover fly on strawberry blossom

I like this one the best, its kinda weird:
