A Day in the Swamp

An immature bald eagle greeted me on my way out to the swamp last week.

Irises are in bloom.

The prehistoric landscape is awash with bright green foliage.

Autumn is usually my favorite time of year in the swamp, because the cypress needles gleam copper amid the rust and crimson backdrop of the maples. However I am finding that the spring is more vibrant and noticeable now than in years past. Whether it is because of the colder winters causing the plants to go brown and lose their leaves (an uncommon phenomenon in south florida for most species), or if it is just me, I am not sure. But I think that March and October are the most beautiful months in the swamp.

In other news, we were delighted to find a coral snake in the yard last weekend. Of all Florida's venomous snakes, the coral snake is the least likely to bite since it is not aggressive. I hope that it will stay on our property, since the neighbors may not be as welcoming.

New leaves and blooms are everywhere.

The garden is buzzing with life.

Sometimes you just have to stop and appreciate your environment.
