St Petersburg, Ft. DeSoto park

Nov 14, 2009 by Janine
Its been a few years since I have last visited the beaches of Ft. DeSoto. I was in the neighborhood for a conference and figured I would stop by. The beaches are beautiful and have been voted #1 in the nation for several years now. The park is known for abundant shorebirds and other wildlife. I saw plenty of birds on my visit and took a few hundred photos!

A multitude of sandwich terns

Greedy gulls

Great posers

I walked out on one of the piers and was amazed to see the ocean literally boiling with bait fish. I have never seen this before and it was quite amazing. The boil provided a buffet for the gulls and terns who would delicately pluck them from the water while on the wing. A pod of dolphins also joined in the feast.

After the excitement of the pier, I decided to sit on the beach for a while and watch the "peeps" go by

Finally, I was treated to a beautiful sunset.
