Sad News

I found the mother cardinal and the two babies dead at the nest today. Something had attacked them violently but had not eaten them, just killed them. Some grackles had been harassing them on Friday- we chased them off but they knew where the nest was so they are likely suspects.
The male is still around and I can hear him singing. I hope he finds another mate and a safer nest site.
I keep trying to tell myself that this sort of thing happens all the time in nature and there is nothing I could have done. But I am still very upset about it.

It's so heartbreaking when these things happen. I remember a couple of years ago crows had built a nest high up in a tree behind the house. A hawk took the baby and crows came from every direction, screaming and yelling. It was awful. I still think about it.

I had a look at your images. You have some fantastic photos there.

Nature is so cruel. I sometimes wish I didn't care and things like this don't hurt me as much as they do. Like OC I remember the summer before last and a crow had taken a young fledgling jackdaw, I didn't know what was going on, there were about 30 jackdaws all chasing this crow, and the youngster was screaming. It's one of the most awful things I've ever witnessed.

Thanks OC.

I am feeling better about it but still very sad. My mom and I marked where we buried them with a large stepping stone and today she decorated it with some round glass pebbles. The male is constantly singing and calling :(

Aw, the poor things. :(

Cardinals are one of my favourite "foreign" birds... I would have really liked to see pics of them growing up.
